Brooklyn’s independent perfumery scene is small, opinionated and genuinely craft-oriented. Orders tend to be a hundred or two hundred units of something particular, and the packaging is expected to look considered rather than expensive.

A hundred units is a normal order here

Our minimum is 100 units per design, which exists precisely because this kind of work is real work rather than an exception. A single-scent launch at 100 boxes is quoted the same way a 10,000 unit run is.

What changes at this scale is where the money goes. Plate and setup costs dominate, so you are better off spending on one striking element than spreading a small budget across four-color artwork that will not have the impact you want.

Stocks that reward restraint

Uncoated boards, kraft and heavier textured stocks do something four-color laminated cartons cannot: they feel like a material rather than like packaging. A single deep impression on an uncoated surface reads as craft in a way that no amount of gloss achieves.

They are also cheaper, because you are paying for board rather than for plates and film. This is one of the few genuine wins available in packaging, and it suits this scene almost perfectly. See the uncoated paper cartons for the starting specification.

Working without a warehouse

Most Brooklyn perfumers store stock in a studio, a workshop or an apartment. Flat delivery is not a preference here, it is a requirement — a thousand assembled boxes genuinely will not fit.

Board is also sensitive to where it sits. Keep flat stock off the floor, away from radiators and out of direct sun, since damp softens creases and overheated storage makes them crack. A dry shelf is all that is needed.

Brooklyn studio picks

Short runs on interesting board, rather than four-color work on thin stock.

Questions we get asked here

Will you take an order of only 100 boxes?
Yes. 100 units per design is our standard minimum and small independent runs are normal work for us, quoted the same way a large run is.
What packaging looks best on a small craft budget?
An uncoated, kraft or textured board with one strong print impression. It reads as craft, feels like a material rather than packaging, and costs less than four-color laminated work because you are paying for board rather than plates and film.
How should we store boxes in a studio?
Flat, off the floor, away from radiators and out of direct sun. Damp air softens creases and overheated storage makes them crack when folded. A dry shelf is sufficient.
