Material Specific Perfume Boxes
Substrate decides more than any other choice on a packaging job. It sets what the print can look like, how much weight the box carries, whether it can be recycled curbside, and what it costs per thousand. This category is organized by material rather than by appearance.

The four substrates we run most
SBS folding boxboard is bleached, smooth on both sides and the default for retail fragrance. It takes fine detail and photographic images cleanly. Typical weights for perfume run 300–400gsm.
Kraft board is unbleached and brown, with visible fiber. It takes solid ink and line work well but muddies photographs, because the brown base shifts every color laid over it. White ink can be printed underneath to correct this, at extra cost.
E-flute corrugated adds a fluted layer between two liners. It roughly triples crush resistance at about 1.5mm thickness, which is why it appears in our fragrance transit cartons rather than in shelf packaging.
Wood and wood veneer is a different manufacturing process entirely, closer to joinery than printing, and is covered separately below.
Reading a board specification
Two numbers describe a board and they are not interchangeable. GSM is weight per square meter. Microns (or points) is thickness. Two boards at the same gsm can differ in thickness, because bulkier boards trap more air.
For perfume cartons, thickness is what you feel and what resists crushing, so it is the more useful figure. When you compare quotes between suppliers, compare microns rather than gsm, or you will pick the lighter box without realizing it. Our standard cardboard perfume cartons are quoted with both figures for that reason.
Curved structures and why they cost differently
Cylinders and round boxes are not folding cartons with curved creases. They are wound or rolled tubes with separate lid and base components, made on different equipment and priced on a different basis.
The practical consequence is that quantity breaks arrive later. A folding carton gets meaningfully cheaper at 1,000 units; a wound cylinder perfume tube often does not move much until 2,500, because the tooling and the winding setup dominate the cost at low volumes. If your budget is tight and the structure is negotiable, that is worth knowing before you commit to the round shape.
Wood: beautiful, slow, and worth checking twice
Wooden presentation boxes are made rather than printed. Branding goes on by laser engraving, screen printing or a fixed metal plate, and none of those behave like offset litho. Fine gradients and photographs are effectively unavailable.
Lead times are longer, minimums behave differently, and grain varies between units in a way that customers read as character rather than defect — provided you have told them to expect it. Our engraved wooden perfume cases are the right answer for limited editions and gift sets, and the wrong answer for a fast seasonal run.
Recyclability, honestly stated
Plain SBS, kraft and corrugated are widely recycled through household streams. What removes a box from that stream is what you add to it: plastic lamination, foil blocking over a large area, glued-in foam, and ribbon.
If a recyclable claim matters to your brand, the practical route is uncoated or water-based-coated board, soy or vegetable inks, a paper-based insert instead of foam, and no lamination. That combination is fully recyclable and looks deliberately understated, which suits some fragrance positioning very well and others not at all. We will tell you plainly which of your choices break the claim rather than let it be assumed.
Material Specific Boxes questions
- What is the difference between gsm and microns on a board spec?
- GSM is weight per square meter and microns is thickness. Two boards at the same gsm can differ in thickness because bulkier boards trap more air. For perfume cartons, compare microns, since thickness is what resists crushing.
- Can I print full-color photographs on kraft board?
- You can, but the brown base shifts every color laid over it and photographs go muddy. Printing a white underbase first corrects this at additional cost. Kraft is at its best with solid ink and line work.
- Why are cylinder boxes priced differently from folding cartons?
- They are wound tubes with separate lid and base components, made on different equipment. Tooling and setup dominate the cost at low volume, so meaningful price breaks arrive later than they do on flat cartons.
- Are your perfume boxes recyclable?
- Plain SBS, kraft and corrugated are widely recycled. Plastic lamination, large foil areas, glued-in foam and ribbon are what remove a box from the household stream. We will tell you which of your chosen options break a recyclable claim.
- How is branding applied to wooden boxes?
- By laser engraving, screen printing or a fixed metal plate. Offset-style gradients and photographic images are not available on wood, and grain varies between units, which reads as character provided customers are told to expect it.
