Perfume Box Size Guide
Every dimension on a perfume carton flows backward from the bottle. Get the measurement stage right and the rest of the specification follows almost mechanically. Get it wrong and the error surfaces at the filling line, which is the most expensive place to find it.
Take three measurements, in millimeters
Record these three numbers before anything else:
- Height with the cap on, from the base to the highest point.
- Width at the widest shoulder, not at the base and not at the neck.
- Depth front to back, again at the widest point.
Use millimeters. Every dieline is drawn in millimeters and every box maker quotes in them, so supplying inches adds a conversion step that is a reliable source of mistakes.
If the bottle has an overcap, take the height twice: once with everything on, once with the overcap removed. Whichever state the bottle is in when it enters the carton is the one the box has to clear.
Add clearance, do not build to exact size
A carton built to the bottle’s exact dimensions does not work. The bottle has to enter and leave without a fight, and there has to be somewhere for it to sit.
Two to three millimeters per side is the working range. At the tight end the box looks better and holds the bottle more firmly; at the loose end it is faster to fill. Below two millimeters, filling staff start struggling with every unit and the time cost compounds fast at volume. Above four, the bottle starts moving in transit, and movement is what loosens atomizers.

The same logic applies to depth and height. For height, add clearance at the top only if the box has a lid that closes onto the bottle; a tuck carton needs the bottle to sit below the tuck flap without touching it.
Irregular and faceted bottles
Faceted, tapered and sculpted bottles defeat measurement alone. Three numbers describe a box; they do not describe a shape that changes across its own height.
For these, trace the outline of the bottle on paper at its widest cross-section and send that with the measurements. Better still, send the bottle. Our die-cut paper inserts are developed against physical samples for exactly this reason, and it removes an entire class of fitting problem before it reaches production.
Measure every size in a range separately
If you run several bottle sizes, measure each one. Do not scale from the smallest.
Caps in particular refuse to scale proportionally: a 30 ml and a 100 ml bottle from the same range frequently share an identical cap, which means the small bottle’s carton needs proportionally far more headroom than the arithmetic suggests. Scaling a dieline is how you end up with a 30 ml carton the bottle will not fit into.
Common sizes we run
These are not standards, because there are none in fragrance, but they are the footprints that come up most often and they are a reasonable sanity check on your own numbers.

If your numbers land far outside these, it is worth a second measurement before you commit. It is usually a units error.

- How much clearance should a perfume box have around the bottle?
- Two to three millimeters per side is the working range. Less and staff fight every unit at the filling stage; more and the bottle drums against the walls in transit. Measure clearance from the widest point of the bottle, not from the base.
- Should I measure my bottle in millimeters or inches?
- Millimeters. Every box maker works in millimeters and every dieline is drawn in them, so supplying inches introduces a conversion step where errors get made. One decimal place is enough precision.
- Do I measure the bottle with the cap on or off?
- With the cap on for the overall height, and take a second height with any overcap removed if the bottle has one. The carton has to clear the tallest state the bottle will be in when it goes into the box.
- Can you work out the box size if I send you the bottle?
- Yes, and it is the most reliable route for irregular or faceted bottles. Numbers alone miss contours, so a physical sample removes a whole class of fitting problems before they reach production.
- What is the smallest perfume box you can produce?
- Anything under about 20 mm on any axis becomes difficult to run reliably on standard equipment. Below that we would talk through the structure with you rather than quote blind, because the folding and gluing behavior changes.
