A drawer in sleeve gives the most convincing secret because the lower drawer has no visible pull on the front face. A false bottom is the simplest to build and the cheapest of the three, since it adds a platform and a ribbon rather than a second drawer. The nested tray is the choice when the hidden item is another bottle, because the lower tray can take a full insert.
Sequencing the Reveal
A secret box only works if the customer finds the compartment. Hide it too well and the card stays in the box. Hide it too little and the surprise is gone. The sequence below is the one we use as a starting point on the proof.
- Outer surface. A clean printed wrap with the brand name and nothing that hints at a second layer.
- Primary opening. The sleeve slides or the lid lifts and the bottle sits centered in its cavity, label forward. This looks like the whole box.
- The cue. A printed line inside the lid, a ribbon tail that looks slightly out of place, or a small arrow on the insert. One cue, not three.
- The second action. The insert lifts by its ribbon, the sleeve turns, or the lower drawer slides out by a tab on the back edge.
- The hidden item. The card, vial or gift, held in its own cavity so it does not rattle before it is found.
Decide the cue early because it changes the print, not just the structure. A message inside the lid is set up on the dieline and included on the proof so you can see how much it gives away.
Keeping the Secret Secure in Transit
A hidden compartment adds a moving part, and moving parts rattle. The hidden item needs its own die-cut cavity, cut to its size, so a card cannot slide and a vial cannot roll. The bottle above it sits in a paper or foam insert as it would in any rigid box. If the box ships to the customer by courier, a plain E-flute outer protects the wrap. Finishes That Do Not Give the Game Away
The outer finish should look complete on its own, as if there were nothing more to find. The finishes below suit that brief and hold up to the extra handling a secret box gets.
- Soft-touch lamination with a debossed logo, which hides the fine seam line of a lower drawer.
- A single PMS color wrap with foil stamping for the brand name, so the sleeve has no pattern that a drawer seam would interrupt.
- Matte lamination outside with a contrasting printed color inside the compartment, so the reveal changes color.
- Uncoated textured paper wrap with blind embossing for brands that avoid plastic film.
- Spot UV reserved for the inside of the lid or the drawer face, where it is seen only after the first opening.
Magnetic closures can be added to the sleeve or lid, and ribbon pulls are matched to a PMS reference where the stock allows. A die-cut window is possible on the primary opening but not on the compartment, since a window would defeat the purpose.

How is a false bottom built into a perfume box?
A rigid platform sits inside the box on a ledge or on short board risers, leaving a shallow space beneath it. The bottle cavity is cut into the platform, and a ribbon tab lets the platform lift out. The hidden item sits in its own cavity in the base so it cannot slide around.
Will the hidden compartment show from the outside?
Not if the structure is built for it. A lower drawer is pulled from the back edge so no tab shows on the front, and a false bottom is invisible until the platform lifts. A plain or soft-touch wrap hides the fine seam of a drawer better than a busy pattern does.
What can the secret compartment hold besides the bottle?
Flat or small items: a handwritten card, a scent-notes booklet, a sample vial of a second fragrance, a small piece of jewelry or a key. The compartment is sized to the item you name on the quote, so tell us its dimensions and we cut a cavity that holds it still.
Why should the hidden lower drawer have no visible pull?
Because a second ribbon on the front face gives the secret away. The bottle drawer can carry a ribbon pull for ease, but the lower drawer should not. Instead it is opened by a tab on the back edge or by pressing the drawer face so it slides out from the other end of the sleeve.
Which gives the better reveal, a drawer or a false bottom?
A drawer in sleeve gives the stronger surprise because the lower drawer is a separate object the customer did not expect. A false bottom is quieter and simpler, and it costs less to build since it adds a platform rather than a second drawer. Choose by the item and by budget.
How much bigger does a secret compartment make the box?
By roughly the thickness of the hidden item plus the board around it. A card under a false bottom adds very little height. A vial or a second drawer adds more. We keep the addition as small as the structure allows and show the finished dimensions on the dieline before you approve.
Can the hidden layer carry a printed message?
Yes. The face of the lower drawer, the underside of the lifting platform or the base of the compartment can all be printed, and this is often where the personal message goes. Because it is only seen after the second action, it can be more direct than the outer branding.
Will the drawer loosen after repeated opening?
A rigid grayboard drawer in a wrapped sleeve keeps its fit through normal use because the board does not compress like a folding carton. We set the sleeve clearance so the drawer slides without being loose. If the box will be opened daily, mention it so we can size the fit for that.
What bottle does the 10 cm by 5 cm by 3 cm example refer to?
That is the sample flacon on our original specification, a rectangular glass bottle with a metal cap that is typical of a 50 ml fragrance. It is an example only. Your box is built around your bottle, so send its measurements with the cap on and we design the cavity and compartment to fit.
Is a false base possible in a tuck-end carton?
A false base can be built into a tuck-end carton on heavy SBS board, which costs and weighs less and ships flat. The compartment is shallower and suits a card rather than a vial. A hidden drawer needs the stiffness of rigid grayboard, so that structure stays rigid.
How many stages can the reveal have?
Two is the practical limit for most sets: the bottle, then the hidden item. A third stage, such as a nested tray under a false bottom, is possible on a rigid box but makes it taller and raises the chance the last layer is never found. We advise two unless the set needs more.
Can a magnetic closure be added to the outer sleeve?
On a lidded or book-style secret box, yes, the magnets sit in the lid and the base wall as usual. A plain sleeve over a drawer does not need one, since the sleeve holds the drawer by friction. We confirm the closure on the structure before the proof so it does not interfere with the hidden drawer.

Does the hidden compartment affect recycling?
Not on its own. The platform, drawer and cavity are board, so a secret box built with paper inserts and no magnets recycles as paper once the wrap is accepted by the local scheme. Magnets, foam inserts and fabric lining need to be removed first, as on any rigid box.
